New Linguistics Research Group: The Computing Linguists

March 23, 2026 by Fionn McPhee

The Linguistics Department is excited to announce the addition of a new research group to its roster: The Computing Linguists (TCL).

The Computing Linguists is a collective space for bridging language and computation across the tri-campus Linguistics community. Its topics of focus include computationally modelling speech, syntax, or semantics, and language in the mind, brain, and society.

Research groups are an opportunity for faculty and graduate students to come together to discuss and present research (in progress), as well as prepare for upcoming conference presentations (among other research-related activities). The department has a number of research groups on a variety of linguistic fields, with a rotating presenter structure: CSoL (Cognitive Science of Language Group), LDDR (Language Description, Documentation and Revitalization Group), LVC (Language Variation and Change Group), Phon (Phonetics and Phonology Group), Semantics Group, the Syntax Project, and now, TCL.
