Graduate Student Funding
Please refer to the Faculty of Arts & Science for information about base funding and planned increases.
Base Funding
The Department of Linguistics provides base funding packages of at least $20,000 CAD plus tuition and fees to all students in the funded cohort: MA students receive 1 year of funding, and PhD students are funded in years 1-4.
Funding comes from a variety of sources, including but not limited to:
- Teaching assistantships
- Research assistantships
- University of Toronto Fellowships (UTF)
- External scholarships
All students in the funded cohort receive an individual funding letter at the beginning of the academic year that outlines the funding package they will receive, including base funding and any known additional funding (e.g. extra TA hours). There are many factors that can influence the total funding a student receives, including top-up awards for major award recipients, extra TA hours, admission awards, and additional funding from other sources.

These external awards become part of the award winner's funding package. The University of Toronto also awards a number of scholarships to both domestic and international students.
